Woodruff WI Custom Home Builder - North Twin Builders

Woodruff - Scenic Small Town in Northern Wisconsin

Woodruff is located on the intersection of Highways 51 and 47 and is in Oneida County. Because 95% of Woodruff is owned by state, federal, and county interests, there is a lot of recreational opportunities to be found here. The Art Oehmcke State Fish Hatchery, is one of the only hatcheries still in operation in Wisconsin that is responsible for restocking muskellunge, walleye, and northern pike in lakes all over the state.

Logging Effects on Area Waterways

As with many other Northern Wisconsin cities, the population of Woodruff rapidly increases in the summer months, although there are many activities to be enjoyed year round. In the logging days, dams were built to back up water levels in the area chains of lakes to convey lumber over the waterways that resulted. Since lumberjacks had little time to spare, meals were quiet and the men learned to “bolt” their food instead of chewing it.

A Pretty Penny in Woodruff, Wisconsin

In 1953, a replica of a Lincoln penny made of concrete was erected to symbolize the local school children raising 1.7 million pennies ($17,000) to help build a larger hospital, which was affectionately referred to as Doctor Kate’s Hospital. Today, a museum pays tribute to this doctor – Doctor Kate Newcomb and her Million Penny Parade.
