Did you know that naturally fallen snow is a great insulator? Use this to your advantage during the long winter months in the Northwoods!
Be careful not to pack the snow down next to your home, over septic systems, drain lines, water lines (your well to the house for example), or any other frost sensitive areas. This will help to assure the lines stay safe and thawed throughout the winter. Around your house, the snow will help with your heating bills and possible foundation damage.
During severe winters, you can even use snow by banking it up against your home to cover exposed foundation. Just be careful not to pack the existing snow near your home while doing so, such as by walking on it. A good rule of thumb is 6′ of undisturbed snow around the perimeter of your home, garage or other buildings. Even unheated buildings will benefit from this. As always if you have questions feel free to email or call.- John
